Small businesses around the world are on that same struggle bus. Whether you’re writing the first words for an all-new site or <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/prepare-for-website-redesign/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">undergoing a website redesign</a>, it’s a daunting task.</p><p>Rather than looking at your whole website as an unfriendly void, you can make it easier on yourself by identifying the types of content you need, and what goes where. If you slice it up into bite-sized pieces, it will feel much easier to manage.</p><p>But <strong>how do you figure out what to write?</strong> Let’s use an analogy that makes everybody smile: pizza.</p><p>No matter where you live or what you do for a living, you know how to order a pizza. Heck, you might even be good at making one! There’s nothing scary about pizza.</p><p>Believe it or not, <strong>website copy has the same ingredients as a classic pizza</strong>. Which means that if you can figure out what you want on a pizza, you can write website content.</p><h2><span id="Can_I_do_this_if_Im_not_a_writer">Can I do this if I’m not a writer?</span></h2><p>Yes.</p><h2><span id="Wait_really">Wait, really?</span></h2><p>Here’s the wonderful thing about modern websites: it’s not always about writing like a polished English major. Yes, in some cases a website does need to have flawless grammar and adhere to strict rules, such as medical and legal websites.</p><p>But for most small businesses, it’s actually <strong>more important that you sound like a person</strong> – one that your customers can trust.</p><p>That’s not to say you should skip the spell-checker and write like how you text your partner from the grocery store. Frequent grammatical mistakes cause a poor user experience, which in turn impacts your search ranking.</p><p>What it means is that for many industries, it’s fine to use more relaxed, conversational language on your website.</p><p><strong>Here are five quick ways to decide what your writing should sound like:</strong></p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li><strong>Follow your company’s <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/develop-a-brand-strategy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brand strategy and brand identity guidelines</a></strong> – this should contain specific voice and tone direction for copy</li><li><strong>Check out competitor websites</strong> to see how they talk about similar products and services</li><li><strong>Review the comments on your social posts</strong> and on competitors’ social posts to see how customers talk about what they need</li><li><strong>Use an SEO tool or Google Search Console data</strong> to see what customers actually type into search engines that leads them to your site</li><li><strong>Study customer service communications</strong> like website form responses, chatbot dialogues, and emails to get a sense for how talk about their problems</li></ul></li></ul><p>A website that uses customer-friendly language will attract search traffic, and put people at ease.</p><h2><span id="Build_your_pizza_how_to_write_tasty_website_content">Build your pizza: how to write tasty website content</span></h2><p>Think about your favourite kind of pizza. What do you love about it? Why?</p><p>That dreamy slice may be your top pick because of the specialty crust, but it isn’t <em>only</em> great because of the crust. If the sauce, cheese, or toppings don’t work, a savoury crust goes to waste. It’s the <strong>glorious harmony of these key ingredients</strong> that makes the perfect pie.</p><p>The same is true of your website. So climb into your stretchy pants (bonus points if you’re already wearing them because #WorkFromHomeLife) and let’s go!</p><p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-14759 lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-300x50.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?size=360x60&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-480x80.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-768x128.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-980x163.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-1024x171.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?size=1080x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w" alt="illustration of a hand on an empty pizza dough" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-300x50.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?size=360x60&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-480x80.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-768x128.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-980x163.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough-1024x171.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?size=1080x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-dough.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p><h3><span id="The_Crust">The Crust</span></h3><p>Without a crust, you have no pizza. I mean, you could make a bowl of saucy cheese and toppings and it would still taste amazing – but it’s not the same.</p><p><strong>Your website’s crust is your core content</strong>. It’s the reason customers come to you: what you sell or do that solves a problem they have. You couldn’t properly represent your business online without it.</p><p><strong>Examples of core content:</strong></p><ul><li>Products</li><li>Services</li><li>Projects or case studies</li><li>How it Works or Process pages</li><li>FAQs</li></ul><p>When we help clients gather their content for a new web design, we get them to <strong>start with their core content</strong>. You talk about your products or services all day, either within your team or with customers. This is the place you’re a subject matter expert, so it’s often the easiest to write.</p><p>A customer looking at your core content has a lot of questions, but they’re also close to a conversion if you can nudge them over the line.</p><h4>5 Tips to Write Strong Core Content</h4><p><strong>1. Write like a human:</strong> Refer to the list in the top section to find the ideal writing style. Your website is for your customers, so you need to describe products and services in the words they would use and understand. Avoid industry-speak and technical jargon, then check yourself by having a friend outside your industry read your copy to see if it makes sense to them.</p><p>Envisio is a cloud-based strategic planning platform that’s popular with government organizations. Their copy is easy to read for the type of person who might be great at strategic planning, but not an expert in software:</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-14766 size-large lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-300x111.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?size=360x133&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-480x178.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-768x284.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-980x363.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-1024x379.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?size=1080x400&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-1200x444.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?size=1440x533&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-1536x568.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-2048x758.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" alt="screenshot showing envisio's homepage callouts using human language" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-300x111.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?size=360x133&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-480x178.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-768x284.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-980x363.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-1024x379.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?size=1080x400&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-1200x444.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?size=1440x533&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-1536x568.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example-2048x758.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/01-Envisio-core-content-example.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" /></p><p><strong>2. Make it all about them:</strong> Rather than just describing what you do or offer, describe the direct benefit to your customer. How will it make their daily life better, easier, or more efficient? If you focus on writing about desirable outcomes, you stand a better chance of making the conversion.</p><p>A well-written case study isn’t just quickly describing what you did and why you’re awesome. It should allow the reader to see how you helped a business like theirs achieve an exciting outcome, so that they can see how you might do the same for them.</p><p>We actually put a lot of work into our own <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/case-studies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">web design case studies</a> – take a look to see how we write them!</p><p><strong>3. Less is more:</strong> Even if you have a complex product, such as software, your main pages shouldn’t look like a wall of copy. The goal of B2B core content is to start the conversation – get the customer to make contact.</p><p>If you need to share heavy details like product specs or troubleshooting guides, you can offer that information in creative ways that don’t overwhelm everyone else viewing that page: expandable content blocks on individual product pages, downloads, FAQs, or a Resources page.</p><p>Motio offers custom software that improves the experience of using complex business intelligence software. Their simple, human overviews make the benefits super clear! Answer the big questions:</strong> Speaking of FAQs – use your data on the questions customers ask to provide that information up front. Some websites have an FAQs page, while others include FAQs on each product or service. Remember that your website serves visitors 24/7. Providing answers outside office hours, when someone is researching your business, can help you get that lead instead of a competitor.</p><p><strong>5. Boost it with social proof:</strong> You don’t have to write all of the words on your website. In fact, <a href="https://optinmonster.com/social-proof-statistics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">testimonials can increase conversions by 34%</a>! Rounding up Google and Facebook reviews, or soliciting testimonials from clients, can give you an excellent piece of core content to improve your product and service pages.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-14760 lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-300x50.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?size=360x60&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-480x80.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-768x128.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-980x163.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-1024x171.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?size=1080x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w" alt="illustration of a pizza crust covered in sauce" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-300x50.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?size=360x60&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-480x80.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-768x128.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-980x163.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce-1024x171.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?size=1080x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-sauce.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p><h3><span id="The_Sauce">The Sauce</span></h3><p>The expression ‘secret sauce’ was made popular in the 1970s by McDonald’s, when they advertised “two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – all on a sesame seed bun”.</p><p>McDonald’s definitely didn’t invent the idea of a secret sauce – but most people first hear the expression from fast food marketing. Jack in the Box has Jack’s Secret Sauce, and KFC has its 11 mysterious herbs and spices.</p><p><strong>Your website’s secret sauce is what makes you special</strong>. How are you different from competitors? Why should a potential customer come to you instead of another company?</p><p>Some secret sauce content is about your capabilities, while storytelling content humanizes your brand and makes you appealing through shared values with a potential customer.</p><p><strong>Examples of secret sauce content:</strong></p><ul><li>Why Us page</li><li>About page</li><li>Team page</li><li>Careers page</li><li>Community- or environment-related pages</li></ul><p>Your company’s differentiators might already be well-documented and defined, either in your <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/develop-a-brand-strategy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">brand identity guidelines</a> or other materials that were created when the company was formed.</p><p>If it’s been awhile, you should check in with stakeholders to make sure you still want to talk about the company in the same way before you start to write.</p><h4>4 Tips to Write Saucy Standout Content</h4><p><strong>1. Write like a human:</strong> Yes, I’m repeating myself. But that’s because there are so many awesome companies with websites that sound uptight, convoluted, or just nothing like their brand. Talk about your differentiator to a friend, and pay attention to which parts make you both the most excited or interested.</p><p><strong>2. Write with someone in mind:</strong> Your business might already have <a href="https://offers.hubspot.com/persona-templates" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">buyer personas</a>, or you might need to create a couple for yourself. For content about your company story, values, community initiatives, or sustainability commitments, it’s helpful to <strong>pretend you’re writing it for a specific customer</strong>. Know who they are: age, passions, pain points, even what they’re likely doing when they read that particular page – and then relate to them.</p><p>Best Film produces technical fabrics for film, and their customers are on busy film sets. They keep their copy on every page short n’ sweet (and sometimes a little rough around the edges), like how they would talk to customers on the phone.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-14768 size-large lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-300x120.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?size=360x144&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-480x192.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-768x307.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-980x392.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-1024x410.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?size=1080x432&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-1200x480.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?size=1440x576&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-1536x614.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-2048x819.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" alt="screenshot of the Best Film blurb about their team" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-300x120.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?size=360x144&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-480x192.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-768x307.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-980x392.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-1024x410.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?size=1080x432&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-1200x480.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?size=1440x576&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-1536x614.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content-2048x819.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/03-best-film-example-of-storytelling-content.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" /></p><p><strong>3. id="The_Cheese">The Cheese</span></h3><p>A pizza without cheese is just a flatbread (although a flatbread can have cheese and not become a pizza). I have strong feelings about this.</p><p>Cheese is <strong>casually crushing it in the background</strong>, working double-time to deliver a great texture and taste while keeping the toppings from falling all over your lap.</p><p>You don’t need five different cheeses, or an expensive cheese, to have a great pizza. A good mozzarella can do the job. In fact, getting too creative with cheese can spoil the taste of the whole pie.</p><p>Your website’s cheese is the <strong>motivational content</strong> that helps a visitor start their journey, find their way through your content, and convert. It’s not specifically persuading them of anything, like your core and differentiator content. It’s the copy they need to get excited, find their way around, and complete important actions that all that other content convinced them to take.</p><p><strong>Examples of motivational content :</strong></p><ul><li>Homepage</li><li>Contact page</li><li>Where to Buy page</li><li>Book a Demo page</li><li>Customer Support pages</li><li>Callouts</li><li>Forms, menus, and buttons</li></ul><p>You might be thinking, “That’s extremely important content! Why didn’t we talk about that sooner?”</p><p>It’s <strong>easiest to write what you know</strong>, which is your services and products. It’s a little harder to write your differentiator and storytelling copy. But once you’ve done all of that, you’ll be in the perfect zone to write this motivational copy. Usable words will pop into your head.</p><p>If you start with your buttons and callouts because they look small and easy to check off, you risk writing boring, unbranded copy that could be found on any other website.</p><p>And here’s my personal secret, from years of writing copy for client websites: I <strong>always write the homepage last</strong>, because then it basically writes itself.</p><h4>5 Tips to Write Motivational Copy that Sticks</h4><p><strong>1. Don’t obsess over your homepage:</strong> Sometimes companies come to us with big ideas for complicated homepages with the latest design trends and excessive media. The thing is, <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/forget-the-homepage-focus-on-what-matters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">your homepage is NOT a destination</a>! Unless you have a microsite with only one landing page, conversions aren’t happening here – <strong>the point isn’t for people to hang around</strong>. It’s a gateway to literally everything else on your website.</p><p>With that said, it’s the most highly viewed page, because it’s the one linked to your business profiles, social media, and listings like Google Maps.</p><p>What you want is a homepage with <strong>clear menus and callouts filled with enticing copy</strong> (your secret sauce), to get visitors quickly moving to the next step. And as I mentioned, if you’ve already written your other pages, you can paraphrase your own words or choose tasty excerpts to fill in the homepage callouts!</p><p><strong>2. Be smart but not clever:</strong> There are lots of places in your website copy to be witty, if that’s your brand. But a wise writer will keep motivational content simple and clear.</p><p>If your menus are full of random words, how will a customer be able to find key pages? And if a button doesn’t state what will happen when it’s clicked, why the heck would a person use it? This <strong>microcopy needs to make immediate sense to do its job</strong>.</p><p>Naturally:wood’s website is a huge provincial resource, home to an immense amount of information. Their menu is tidy and straightforward, with clear paths to content.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-14772 size-large lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-300x82.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?size=360x98&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-480x131.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-768x210.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-980x268.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-1024x280.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?size=1080x295&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-1200x328.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?size=1440x394&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-1536x420.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-2048x559.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" alt="screenshot showing the menus for naturally:wood" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-300x82.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?size=360x98&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-480x131.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-768x210.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-980x268.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-1024x280.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?size=1080x295&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-1200x328.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?size=1440x394&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-1536x420.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus-2048x559.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07-naturally-wood-example-of-great-website-menus.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" /></p><p><strong>3. Provide ample information:</strong> With pages like Where to Buy, Book a Demo, and Contact, you want the customer to complete these actions. This is where the money lies. Why, then, would you only include basic copy with the page title, your address and phone number, followed by a form?</p><p>Now is the time to remind them of your differentiator, and to describe what will happen next – the benefit to them.</p><p>Botanica’s <a href="https://botanicahealth.com/where-to-buy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Where to Buy page</a> is a brilliant example of being helpful and incentivizing the reader. They feature multiple ways to find the nearest store selling their products, then take it one step further by offering a coupon for that purchase – and the coupon copy reassures you about spam and privacy.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-14773 size-large lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-300x115.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?size=360x138&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-480x184.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-768x294.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-980x375.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-1024x392.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?size=1080x413&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-1200x459.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?size=1440x551&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-1536x588.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-2048x784.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" alt="screenshot showing Botanica's where to buy page with a coupon" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-300x115.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?size=360x138&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-480x184.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-768x294.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-980x375.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-1024x392.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?size=1080x413&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-1200x459.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?size=1440x551&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1440w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-1536x588.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page-2048x784.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 2048w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-botanica-example-of-where-to-buy-page.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px" /></p><p><strong>4. Don’t neglect your forms:</strong> Arguably the most important content on your website is your forms. That’s where people sign up, book in, or reach out. They generate leads and make sales. The copy above and within your forms is <strong>so incredibly important to whether or not you succeed</strong>. I could write a whole article on the topic of forms. Luckily other people already did, and I can just link to great resources.</p><ul><li>Here’s an article on how to write <a href="https://www.activecampaign.com/blog/opt-in-copy" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">opt-in copy that doesn’t suck</a></li><li>Hubspot has compiled this roundup of <a href="https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/form-examples" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">10 examples of great web forms</a></li><li>And here’s a solid starter on <a href="https://www.zuko.io/blog/use-great-microcopy-to-improve-your-online-forms" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">writing microcopy for forms</a></li><li>If you’re serious about conversions, I highly recommend ordering <a href="https://www.microcopybook.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Microcopy: A Complete Guide</a>; this book is packed with tips and examples that will make your website awesome</li></ul><p><strong>5. Take advantage of hidden pages:</strong> There are some pages on your website that a person only sees after taking a specific action, like your Thank You page after filling out a form, and your 404 page after attempting to view a page that doesn’t exist.</p><p>Rather than throwing generic copy into those pages and calling it quits, use them to <strong>encourage a next step that isn’t exiting your site</strong>. You might recommend a popular blog post to read, or suggest specific pages they could find answers. Just don’t leave them hanging.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-14762 lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-300x50.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?size=360x60&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-480x80.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-768x128.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-980x163.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-1024x171.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?size=1080x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w" alt="illustration showing a fully topped pizza" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-300x50.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?size=360x60&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-480x80.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-768x128.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-980x163.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings-1024x171.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?size=1080x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/04-toppings.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p><h3><span id="The_Toppings_Extras">The Toppings &amp; Extras</span></h3><p><em>“The word ‘pizza’ first appeared in a Latin text from the central Italian town of Gaeta…in 997 AD; the text states that a tenant of certain property is to give the bishop of Gaeta duodecim pizze (twelve pizzas) every Christmas Day, and another twelve every Easter Sunday.” – <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza#Etymology" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wikipedia</a></em></p><p>You read that right. The first-ever recorded reference to pizza was about giving it to a bishop, who hopefully used all those free pies to throw the first epic pizza parties.</p><p>The original pizza topping of Naples in the late 1800s was simple: fresh tomatoes. Nowadays, <strong>pizza toppings are where your personality shines</strong>! Vegetables. Meat. Extra sauces and spices. Fusion food. There are dessert pizzas, taco pizzas, and even a <a href="https://time.com/4687790/weirdest-pizzas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$500 tequila lobster pizza</a> with caviar and truffle shavings.</p><p>And that’s not to mention the shakers and dipping sauces sold by most fast food pizza joints.</p><p>You can have a pizza without toppings, but most people will find it boring. Likewise, you can have a website with no marketing content. It just won’t drive as many conversions, and it certainly won’t hook visitors or search engines as well as a site that regularly features fresh content.</p><p>This article you’re reading is my latest tasty topping for the Forge and Smith site! We don’t need a blog post on how to write website content, but it <strong>supports our goals</strong> – to craft great websites and teach clients how to support them using digital strategy.</p><p><strong>Examples of marketing content:</strong></p><ul><li>Blog posts</li><li>Research papers</li><li>Infographics</li><li>Videos</li><li>Recipes or project guides (ways to use your product)</li><li>Resources or tools</li><li>Gated content</li><li>Social media feed</li></ul><p>The important thing to remember about marketing content is to <strong>focus on quality, not quantity</strong>. If you have a hard time writing it, it’s better to take your time and produce one good blog post every couple of months than to set an unreasonable deadline and write bad content.</p><p>You can also <strong>outsource this kind of writing</strong>. No one expects you to learn how to write SEO-friendly copy, design images, and film videos on top of your regular job. Lots of agencies specialize in helping you choose keywords, write blog posts, or produce videos.</p><p>If you’re keen to tackle it yourself, that’s awesome.</p><h4>5 Tips to Write Enticing Marketing Content</h4><p><strong>1. Answer the big questions:</strong> Oh hey, remember this tip from writing your core content? The best blog topics to make your customers AND search engines happy is <strong>answering questions people ask about your products or services</strong>. If your customer service team or contact emails reveal common questions, turn them into topics. You can take a question from your FAQs and turn it into a great blog post.</p><p><strong>2. Let the topic dictate the length:</strong> There’s no best or worst number of words for a blog post, or any other type of marketing content. If it only takes 300 words to answer a question, you will create a bad user experience if you try to drag it out to 2000 words just because you heard that longer blog posts are better. Save those for your deep, educational content – like this article you’re reading right now. Your case studies or client success stories can have fewer words and more photos, it’s okay.</p><p><strong>3. Make it easy on the eyes:</strong> If you do end up writing a glorious long-form post, think about a person reading it on their phone. Do your copy a favour by <strong>styling it for the mobile reader</strong> – keep paragraphs short, use logical headings for structure, and break it up with bullet lists and images. Then <strong>add a table of contents plugin</strong> to help visitors navigate to the exact section they want. Styling increases the chance of a potential customer reading it all, getting what they need, and appreciating you as a resource.</p><p><strong>4. Keep lists of topic ideas:</strong> Don’t wait until you sit down to write to think of what will make good content. Look at the kinds of articles you enjoy reading, what competitors write, and the posts your customers share or comment on. That’s gold, right there. Here are 20 <a href="https://anvilbuilt.com/blog-content-ideas-small-business/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">awesome blog topic ideas</a> to help you get going! And here are tips to <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/how-to-plan-content-small-budget/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">plan a whole year of great content</a> (no budget required).</p><p><strong>5. Learn SEO basics:</strong> You don’t have to master SEO, but you can read up on how to write for search engines. This amplifies the payoff for the time you spent writing, by increasing website traffic and potential conversions. You should always prioritize relevant topics that your customers care about over keywords – but you can still <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/content-optimization-checklist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">keep your blog posts and pages optimized</a>.</p><p><strong>Bonus tip: repurpose your work!</strong> If you take the time to write marketing content, you should get the most out of it. That means turning a blog post into social media posts, infographics, videos, audio, downloads – the works! I’ve written another blog post about <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/content-management-strategy-update-retire/#Content_management_strategy_tip_2_Repurpose_That_Content" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">how to repurpose content</a>.</p><h2><span id="Tools_for_Better_Writing">Tools for Better Writing</span></h2><p>What kind of article about ‘how to write website content’ would skip talking about the technical side of writing?</p><p>I can’t teach you a course on writing in this post, although I have experience with that! But I do get that you might be nervous about your ability to string sentences together. Honestly, the best thing to do is get it all out, then read it aloud to yourself and get a friend to read it as well.</p><p>Remember, you’re likely not trying to write a literary masterpiece. You’re trying to recreate the human experience of your company’s customer service, for your website.</p><p><strong>Here’s a list of excellent (and free) resources to improve your writing skills.</strong></p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li>Check out dozens of free copywriting courses on Skillshare, many of which are only an hour long</li><li>Udemy has a <a href="https://www.udemy.com/course/copywritingquickstart/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">free copywriting quickstart course</a></li><li>You can take this <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/learning/learning-to-write-marketing-copy" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">marketing copy course from LinkedIn Learning</a> by signing up for a free first month</li></ul></li></ul><p>Hopefully these insights put you on the ‘write’ track (humour me, it’s been a long post) toward great website content! Remember to be human, address the things your customers care about, and make it mobile-friendly. When in doubt, reach out! We’d love to help you serve up tasty content to your customers.</p></div> </div>

But the question is, how do you speed up your website?</p><p>The answer is simple: <strong>make fewer HTTP requests.</strong></p><h2><span id="Understanding_HTTP">Understanding HTTP</span></h2><p>“HTTP” is short for <strong>Hypertext Transfer Protocol</strong>. HTTP is, in the simplest terms, a prescribed order that transfers information across a network. The majority of the data on the Internet travels by using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. </p><p>The two types of HTTP messages are <strong>requests and responses</strong>. </p><h3><span id="How_HTTP_Works">How HTTP Works</span></h3><p>Let’s start with HTTP <strong><em>requests</em></strong>. </p><p>As an Internet user, your browser generates HTTP requests <strong>every time you interact with a website and its functionality</strong>. As you scroll or click to engage with a specific function, such as a banner image or video, your browser generates a series of requests to the website’s host. It’s asking for access to the relevant information, so you can see and use each part of the site. </p><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" fetchpriority="high" class="wp-image-11820 lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-1024x455.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-300x133.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works.jpg?size=360x160&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-480x213.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-768x341.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-980x436.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-1024x455.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-1200x533.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1200w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works-1536x683.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1536w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/How-HTTP-Works.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1800w" alt="An illustration showing a computer on one side, an internet cloud in the middle, and layers of data in three blocks on the right (web server, video server, message server). It may be useful to think of HTTP as the helpful, universal language that’s understood by both the request and the response – ie. both the subject asking the question <em>and</em> the subject giving the answer.  </p><p>A secured HTTP is called HTTPS, as the term ‘secure’ gets added to the end to specify that the requests and responses are encrypted. </p><p>This type of communication protocol is typically protected by Transport Layer Security (TLS) – formerly known as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Hence, this protocol is sometimes referred to as ‘HTTPS over TLS’.</p><h3><span id="The_Impact_of_HTTP_Requests_on_UX">The Impact of HTTP Requests on UX</span></h3><p>The HTTP and the speed of a webpage are closely connected. </p><p>As we all know, <strong>page speed has a monumental impact on a user’s experience (UX)</strong>. The slower a page is, the more likely you are to become frustrated. This frustration quickly leads to giving up on engaging with the content on the page altogether. In fact, page speed is such an important aspect of a site that <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/improve-google-ranking-website-boosts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google has included it as a ranking factor.</a> </p><p>When you investigate the relationship between page speed and UX, the overarching trend indicates that <strong>slower pages get visited for shorter amounts of time</strong> – and have significantly <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/complete-guide-fix-high-bounce-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher user bounce rates</a>. A bounce rate refers to the number of users that leave a site after visiting only one page. </p><p><strong>Here are the important facts to note about HTTP and UX:</strong> </p><ul><li>The bounce rate of a page can jump from 9% to 38% if the load time increases from 2 to 5 seconds (<a href="https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/reduce-http-requests" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HubSpot</a>)</li><li>The average HTTP request time is between <a href="https://www.littledata.io/average/server-response-time" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">0.5 and 1-2 seconds</a></li><li>User experience decreases exponentially with an increase in request time </li></ul><p>Google’s last several algorithm updates have put more and more weight on UX factors when it comes to ranking websites. That’s why it’s so important to strive for a rapid HTTP request time. </p><h2><span id="How_to_Analyze_Your_Sites_HTTP_Requests">How to Analyze Your Site’s HTTP Requests</span></h2><p>Most Internet users are completely unaware of the numerous processes that unfold in response to every click of the mouse or tap of the screen. But if you’re a website owner or are <a href="https://www.freshbooks.com/hub/startup/how-to-start-a-digital-marketing-agency-in-5-steps" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">working in digital marketing</a>, it’s important to have at least a basic understanding of how these processes work and <strong>how they impact your customers</strong>. </p><p>A great website should drive business growth and stimulate user interactions, encouraging people to return again and again. A poorly designed or lazily managed site is detrimental to this goal, and that includes slow-loading websites.</p><p>HTTP request metrics communicate, in precise terms, <strong>the potential level of engagement of your audience</strong>. This allows you to quantify your general customer satisfaction. </p><p>If this is your first time checking up on the state of your website, you will likely want to generate a detailed report. There are several tools that can help you do this. And depending on the service you choose, you may even receive a diagnosis that outlines a recommended process that will improve the efficacy of your site.  </p><h3><span id="Tools_to_Analyze_Site_Speed">Tools to Analyze Site Speed</span></h3><p><a href="https://gtmetrix.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GTMetrix</a> is Forge and Smith’s top choice for <strong>accurately testing page speed and performance</strong>. This free tool is Canadian, and it generates a score per page that rates your visitors’ page load experience, providing recommendations for fixes if they’re needed.  </p><p><a href="https://developer.chrome.com/docs/devtools/network/reference/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google Chrome’s Network panel</a> can provide you with the exact numbers needed to analyze the state of your site’s HTTP requests. Once you have this information, you should focus on obtaining the request length as well as the number of requests.  </p><p>Google also has <a href="https://pagespeed.web.dev/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PageSpeed Insights</a> that measure a page’s performance on desktop and mobile. Scores between 0 and 100 points are awarded, making it easier to see what’s slowing down your site on a page by page basis. </p><h2><span id="How_to_Reduce_HTTP_Requests">How to Reduce HTTP Requests</span></h2><p>Your website is built using code. You might not think that something like code could become bulky, but it’s actually one of the key areas that can get bloated. <strong>Code or website bloat slows down your site</strong>, so you need to keep tabs on your backend to ensure that your site’s undesirable or obsolete pages don’t hurt your load times. </p><h3><span id="Combine_CSS">Combine CSS</span></h3><p>For every CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) file in your website’s code, an HTTP request is involved. <strong>Combining multiple CSS files</strong> can reduce requests, which optimizes your site’s loading time. </p><p>Not all CSS files can get combined, so it’s worth <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/time-saving-small-business-website-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enlisting the help of a professional developer</a> to perform this task. </p><h3><span id="Reduce_Plugins">Reduce Plugins</span></h3><p>Another effective strategy for reducing HTTP requests is to <strong>reduce non-vital plugins</strong> and, if a plugin is necessary, ensure that it’s streamlined. </p><p>There are programs that you can use to streamline essential plugins, such as social media links that serve to reinvigorate user engagement. If you work with a developer or agency, it’s best to get them to review and remove plugins for you.</p><h3><span id="Minimize_Third-Party_Requests">Minimize Third-Party Requests</span></h3><p>You may also choose to <strong>minimize third-party requests</strong>. If the third party has a slow request and response time, then it delays things on your end. You could have the fastest HTTP speed in the world, but it could still get delayed by a third party. This reflects poorly on your site and undermines the user experience. </p><p>In this context, third party refers to the scripts that you’re running or have embedded in your site that belongs to an external vendor. They can be anything from a social media feed to a chat widget or web analytics tool such as Google Analytics. </p><p>Third-party requests are triggered by external scripts that you may have embedded directly into your website to add functionality. They’re not created by you, and <strong>you don’t have any control over them</strong>. However, you can <a href="https://wp-rocket.me/blog/third-party-scripts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">minimize their impact</a> in many ways, from self-hosting third-party JavaScript files to removing them altogether. </p><h2><span id="Further_Tips_to_Improve_Site_Speed">Further Tips to Improve Site Speed</span></h2><p>There are several strategies that you can employ to optimize the loading time of your website, beyond reducing HTTP requests. </p><ol><li><strong>Declutter and compress existing media </strong>from your WordPress library. If there are big files that are not frequently accessed, remove them. </li><li>If you have larger files that you need to keep, <strong>compress them using a WordPress compression plugin</strong> like Smush or Imagify. </li><li><a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/4-image-optimization-clues-to-solve-the-mystery-of-a-slow-website/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Optimize your images</strong></a>. This is especially important if your site is a media showcase, such as an <a href="https://www.format.com/online-portfolio-website" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">online portfolio</a> or a business site that houses lots of photo-rich projects or case studies.</li><li><strong>Clean up your database</strong> by deleting all old WordPress plugins, post revisions, unused pages, tables, spam comments, and any other information in the databases that is no longer in use or unnecessary. </li><li><strong>Look at your website’s hosting</strong>, and if it’s not already hosted on a dedicated, high-performance server, consider changing hosts. </li><li><strong>Update your CMS</strong>. Depending on the platform or coding language you use, ensure you’re running the latest version of your site (e.g WordPress). </li><li><strong>Streamline your HTML code</strong>, and remove any unimportant JavaScript or CSS files (as with plugins, you’ll likely want a developer’s support in this area)</li><li><a href="https://besttech2earnonline.com/content-delivery-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Use a Content Delivery Network</strong></a><strong>.</strong> A CDN allows you to distribute your site load to multiple different hosting servers. In the event of a crash or a delay, your site doesn’t rely on a single server to load.</li><li><strong>Reduce redirects. </strong>Multiple redirects of your URLs slow a website down as they’re stored in the database. Regularly clean up your redirects as part of your database cleanup.</li><li><strong>Host hefty videos externally</strong> by publishing them on YouTube and embedding the video link in your site.</li></ol><p>The faster your website, the better your engagement rate – and the longer users will stay on your site and potentially convert.</p><p>There’s a need for speed online and when it comes to page load times, every second counts. It’s a no brainer. </p></div> </div>

And the opinions visitors form about your brand directly impact whether they will continue to interact with your site, <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/build-trust-and-authority-with-content/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perceive your brand as an industry authority</a>, and, ultimately, convert.</p><p>But what <em>exactly</em> influences people’s opinion on a brand’s website? And what do they first notice when landing on a page? It’s the content at the top – your header. </p><ul><li>Research suggests that the most valuable section of any website is the <strong>content placed above the fold</strong></li><li>A <a href="https://www.nngroup.com/articles/scrolling-and-attention/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2018 study from the Nielsen Norman Group</a> discovered that web users spend as much as 57% of their browsing time interacting with the elements within the first screenful</li></ul><p>Knowing this is the case, it’s only logical that you should look for ways to supercharge your website header.</p><p>This article will teach you how to compose your site’s most visible piece of real estate, and <strong>design a header guaranteed to impress and convert</strong>.</p><h2><span id="1_Hero_Image">1. Hero Image</span></h2><p>Your most important header design task is to choose a hero visual that will appeal to your audience (and present your brand in a positive light). And, truth be told, this will be one of the more difficult tasks.</p><p>You see, no formula will help you pick the perfect hero image. With so many possibilities out there, you will instead have to make your choice of website visuals based on two factors:</p><ul><li>The <strong>aesthetic direction</strong> you want to take your design in. Remember, despite the appeal of a beautifully designed website, research shows that <a href="https://ai.googleblog.com/2012/08/users-love-simple-and-familiar-designs.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">users usually prefer websites that are simple and familiar</a>. Do make sure that your site looks good – just don’t be tempted to reinvent the wheel, as this could lead to <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/bad-website-checklist-web-design-mistakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bad UX</a>, user frustrations, and (worst case scenario) high bounce rates followed by poor brand perception.</li><li>The <strong>impression you want to leave on your customers</strong>. The visuals you include in your hero section will automatically inform the perception your audience forms of your brand. So, before you start choosing images, <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/develop-a-brand-strategy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">define your brand identity</a> and know how you want your audience to see you.</li></ul><p>For example, a pared-down web design with minimal or no imagery is a popular choice in 2022 and with good reason – check out how beautifully <a href="https://www.grownalchemist.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grown Alchemist</a> implements it in its hero section.</p><p>This brand uses a single GIF to communicate the quality and refinement of its products. This choice shows that the brand is committed to a trendy <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/238106570_The_Role_of_Aesthetics_in_Web_Design" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">minimalist aesthetic</a>, but that’s not all. It also displays its commitment to prioritizing an exceptional user experience over visuals (without sacrificing aesthetic appeal).</p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/aGswXP0UUsn0DsR0FONjBLjuyeAZQIzMRm7HYNnW4x9BDQ3jBpWo7fMrO5_RWb0SKl5GuKa05upS-dsTeB0tPaekAWZz0R-7KopNJaQppdz2nbCmCObmOpFmjfSqbnVFGk_l1UnijCcqER-bVoa8WiQ" alt="" /></figure><p>Or, you could use your website header in a completely different manner. You could employ hero imagery that includes people. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/20650308" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study from 2009</a> revealed that sites that include images of people’s faces lead visitors to perceive the brand as appealing, warm, and user-oriented. This is why many SaaS companies, like <a href="https://www.chanty.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chanty</a>, choose such imagery for their header sections.</p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/1Si5IW0wc5g641XTNsG96pPDK7beeDewESt_txT2MxlIQGyqJYeG8N6AaQLi9ejGpNZRqcjJAZeODzb-JLYqYqC0eH3NqiK31CF3e3frMauaUHQdkS8DDocEKCmbVCK4gpM2f0l26lXfWlFQ4cP73BU" alt="" /></figure><p>To drive a superb user experience, you don’t actually have to use hero imagery at all. You can get results that are just as positive by playing around with typography or by going with more advanced content formats such as video, as done on the <a href="https://www.lelabofragrances.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Le Labo</a> homepage.</p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/HuGEAKGylj-fJ1tbPsiiXCAnKqDD42t2gP_VXI-q3m6PhCo99QfmVDb1oKvPcpw3Z4sYhgK2wvTwE0GyePYA1lqR1VxOB8ZPQ9fw_PiorbxoLMwAFB0OcuF0T44Q22R4wHhk1w9GQU2cjZjqvmO8cLA" alt="" /></figure><h2><span id="2_The_Value_Proposition">2. The Value Proposition</span></h2><p>Once you’ve perfected your hero image – the visual foundation for communicating your brand’s expertise and trustworthiness – you can start focusing on the second most essential website header element for driving conversions: <strong>the value proposition</strong>.</p><p>Also known as an elevator pitch, this is the promise that concisely conveys the value you offer to your target audience, and needs to hit the right balance. </p><p>On the one hand, it needs to be sufficiently impressive, unique, and attractive. But, on the other hand, it also has to be truthful and believable. And let’s not forget that you should also ensure that you <em>always</em> deliver on your promises.</p><p>If you want to make sure that your unique sales proposition converts, here are the ways to boost it so that it drives results.</p><h3><span id="Keep_it_Simple_and_Relevant">Keep it Simple and Relevant</span></h3><p>For a value proposition in the header to be eye-catching and effective, it doesn’t have to be cute or clever. </p><p>Instead, it needs to communicate the value you offer to your customers directly and understandably, ensuring that every single person who lands on your website knows what you do within the first couple of seconds spent on your homepage. </p><p>For inspiration on how to inspire conversions by being direct, check out <a href="https://ultimatemealplans.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ultimate Meal Plans’</a> value proposition, which promises “<em>Meal planning made simple. Customized meal plans, grocery lists and recipes delivered every week.”</em> </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/ulMWWirN5DOS-39uiXOkjmpPLoZPXw5rwPYpPV13qG2sfmw-2a3DkeWjeJM2c-6JulfVBWGlN5rdZpVZGBP_FdtaZUgpbSVaGmK5dSCI4Hocy8sfcWXdmAYAS7tTC-RNvOS7AE7wZx_IT0G4giI2AqA" alt="" /></figure><h3><span id="Focus_on_Customer_Rewards_NOT_Your_Product">Focus on Customer Rewards, NOT Your Product</span></h3><p>If you study consumers’ decision-making process, you’ll realize that people don’t care about advanced features and technical details. </p><p>As a rule, they always choose to invest in the solution that benefits them the most (whether by <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/288706758_Consumer_Priorities_in_Online_Shopping" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">offering the most value for money, being convenient, or respecting their privacy</a>). </p><p>So, when composing your unique value proposition, do so in a way that focuses on your customers, as done by <a href="https://curology.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Curology</a>, a brand that promises <em>“Full-service skincare […] personalized by experts for clinically-proven results.” </em></p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/UdqwZ3lZ42KQKC3aC0qwfwO1gwg_PFeMZV9YCMtEZqvmT52w-quERCxBOHX6ZKwx0QSS5IRDC622wHR3aJLJJXQTKD36BfKyjMuUT_10PXiOi1su5j8yvZLw2obdsZiWCQrM2Fo7cFiVb5qOJdjpkZM" alt="" /></figure><h3><span id="Differentiate_Yourself_From_Competitors">Differentiate Yourself From Competitors</span></h3><p>Finally, as you try to compose a value proposition guaranteed to drive conversions, don’t forget that your website header offers a prime opportunity to highlight the uniqueness and superiority of your products. </p><p>Try to use this section to immediately differentiate your brand from your competitors. </p><p>For example, Google does it on the <a href="https://www.google.com/chrome/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chrome</a> landing page by pointing out that the app is <em>“The browser built by Google.”</em> Simple? Definitely. But it works. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/zxZcsZCEwjSNPybKAQ8w4iSCsNmI6WBap86pMiqE84KnpBF1K34Q-tJ6T1qtrpssGG6FJucp1r57q4TqWS0cuscX9A7yiEKIHtT35dleqT4dD6xsqenIuvz76EfTTakIKa06RmmdT1OfhHbMk4zNyNI" alt="" /></figure><p><em>Source: </em><a href="https://www.google.com/chrome/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>google.com</em></a></p><h2><span id="3_Navigation">3. Navigation</span></h2><p>When thinking about how website header design contributes to good UX and UI, you’ll realize that one specific part of that topmost area — <strong>the navigation menu</strong> — determines how well your website performs in your audience’s eyes.</p><p>In fact, a well-designed and user-oriented navigation menu is an absolute must if you want your website to drive success.</p><p>But while you may have read about <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/website-navigation-ux-best-practices/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">navigation best practices</a> — like the 3-click rule — you may still wonder: what does UX <em>research</em> have to say about navigation?</p><p>As user-friendliness is concerned, there’s no definitive rule about the best way to structure your site. There are, however, a couple of tips you should try and stick to when optimizing your website header.</p><h3><span id="Don8217t_Prioritize_Form_Over_Function">Don’t Prioritize Form Over Function</span></h3><p>UX research shows that what matters most in a web design is <a href="https://www.nngroup.com/articles/hamburger-menus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discoverability and ease of use</a>. </p><p>Understand the difference between <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/mobile-design-business-websites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mobile-first and responsive web design</a>, and do your best to favour visibility and usability over trends or conventions. </p><p>For an excellent example of a responsive header design, check out <a href="https://www.persol.com/usa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Persol</a>. This brand’s header changes based on the user’s screen size, with anything below 1,025 pixels wide triggering the traditional horizontal navigation bar to switch to the more mobile-friendly hamburger menu<em>. </em></p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/Bw-wsJ1D25pKMNnkU8jKBoiXQLrcTcpPiiUgwIfXutEInS2L6o4AWSySgZ250_05iHyJ6y7bCWPFOEYZYnqgd3DFGy1uRcrSr1StYz8N_GT1saV8WTStQ__PGYqXo0VLsiMVYXu3RDngfSexLDnEk4E" alt="" /></figure><p><em>S</em></p><h3><span id="Determine_Menu_Items_Based_on_Needs_Not_Rules">Determine Menu Items Based on Needs, Not Rules</span></h3><p>Some best-practice advice will tell you that your navigation menu shouldn’t include more than seven items. However, you need to know that this isn’t <em>exactly</em> true. </p><p><strong>Your navigation menu can include paths to all of your key content</strong>, as long as the menus are properly structured. You might separate pages into a main menu and a smaller utility menu stacked above it, or make strategic use of drop-downs. To avoid menu clutter that causes confusion and decision paralysis, it’s still ideal to keep menus clean and usable. </p><p>If your organization specializes in one thing, <strong>don’t try to cram too many elements into a horizontal menu</strong>. Instead, prioritize links to pages that benefit your potential buyers, as done by <a href="https://evolveskateboardsusa.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evolve Skateboards</a>. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/bek34P7iTRobBZ2B_ypE98KMy1VoAYXRp2jHuJ9i3ITm-meUgpuXsuqVtPIpcHPI18lSrvMbYilckfvgLVLXreElCW4pEaCvqNzQUV_DnujVYA_fRl8f54LM6CfYmqOfD1GXioo_7uTMsaltqAbz9yw" alt="" /></figure><h3><span id="Experiment_With_Design">Experiment With Design</span></h3><p>While designing the navigation menu on your website header seems like a pretty straightforward task, don’t allow yourself to be limited by conventions. </p><p>Yes, you should meet web visitors’ UX expectations. But, as long as those are respected, you can do whatever works best for your brand – even if it means placing the menu in a slightly more unconventional spot, as done on the <a href="https://carnival.withspotify.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carnival Sounds</a> website. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/hxWrQzwZ_m_DQgbElhA1X1G8HftLpyc16EaaXOc7gDpErSVZtKg0OJiRtdy2NZbY32HjEoas4qRYD5oeGkua_eKP_FPzOzhYuQqOZU3B2LL2hLAYSw0BLUaZGn4HEv6721vtBVm-WEdGV_u6ZF5tuqs" alt="" /></figure><h2><span id="4_Site_Search">4. Site Search</span></h2><p>Despite being an often-overlooked website header element (or at least an afterthought), a <strong>well-placed and optimized site search function</strong> is crucial for ensuring high performance from your website.</p><p>According to <a href="https://econsultancy.com/is-site-search-less-important-for-niche-retailers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research from Econsultancy</a>, not all website visitors use the search function. Nonetheless, when they do, they are 1.8x more likely to convert and contribute to an average of 13.8% of total revenue. </p><p>Considering this information, getting the search function in your website header just right is of the utmost importance.</p><p>To ensure visibility, place the search button in an expected position. The top right corner of the navigation bar, as used on the <a href="https://www.loewe.com/usa/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loewe</a> site, is the traditional choice. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/aB4jlCjpmuICyT5MI8Qd7ZBsIxP7r7-pB-MoOwhrN0HeAeNL5ypVlcgji7CvBdNs0j2XjMZmgUQ6-oaSF1XD1LhlL2S1kocSqBxGmNeUvdJE0io9JL3x7z4gB51_17zwecuMZWOWSYNuUo8gjl6_uX4" alt="" /></figure><p>You can also display the search bar more prominently, especially if your business relies on a lot of content marketing. </p><p>For example, the <a href="https://abovehouse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Above House</a> website has a search trigger button that launches an overlay. This shows the brand’s commitment to giving readers agency regarding the content they consume, without forcing them to deal with unwanted distractions.</p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/HMXRBI6YewJfwHLnGUxqsxJ1yLimg0iOowAjZaZkMPpUxw8yMsdiEzfn0MvMl_aEFNYZ9gX-MFeVmBVwCDIT3Tfq49AnT980gvT_ejYHpJSSpnF4Xioh5mlNbJfQCqRBOMLmPyM8_9h8jbBkPxov-WA" alt="" /></figure><h2><span id="5_Important_Calls_to_Action">5. Important Calls to Action</span></h2><p>As you probably already know, a fully optimized <strong>call-to-action button</strong> is essential for ensuring your website converts. </p><p>But have you considered that the best way to display CTAs, especially high-value ones, is to place them in multiple prime positions on your website? That’s right. Using your website header to display calls to action can help you <strong>attract user attention</strong> and ensure your web visitors convert into customers.</p><p>What are the rules for placing important calls to action in your website header? Well, there are a few that you’ll want to pay attention to when designing your site.</p><h3><span id="Draw_Attention_with_Eye-Catching_Design_Choices">Draw Attention with Eye-Catching Design Choices</span></h3><p>The prerequisite for achieving high conversion rates with website header CTAs is to make the right design choices. </p><p>Your best bet will be to choose an aesthetic direction that fits in with your site’s overall look, while still standing out. </p><p>A quick glance at the <a href="https://flora.appfinca.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flora</a> website shows just how well the black and dark green CTA buttons stand out without disrupting the overall look of the site or feeling out of place. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nTRiTBLTC7hyMKvI8PL2Poug2cULXCPS3X6mo_jv-gv3ibcs3J9ibhMkEVc1lrcSKFzTcYKtlH2l6tkHOixM9Kezd3ZH_pPur5qXDwyh8UtACXNhAFP89dbXCWVzt7WS9zLZ4tdWPa5mffD866YBcKY" alt="" /></figure><h3><span id="Show_CTAs_in_Prime_Positions">Show CTAs in Prime Positions</span></h3><p>Another proven CTA button placement strategy you can implement in your header design is to place these elements in the spots they’re most likely to be noticed by web visitors. </p><p>The traditional choice is, naturally, right below your value proposition. </p><p>However, you could also reserve a spot for high-value CTAs in your site’s navigation menu, as done by <a href="https://ottoapp.me/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Otto</a>. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eDKbdtGA_oHzjKRyIdgDlwshFm79ZohtGqk-HY5Apn0wJLKnX8KD9xv3GXVeJwsGA1hlT7CmIiuIi8EFHZc1C3nZuO_GQvpOMNMOoOprHPN_lAuT7YRxd3gVR765tQKueXBsCByAEjgax3z8QrVf73o" alt="" /></figure><h3><span id="Communicate_Who_You_Are_and_What_Visitors_Can_Do">Communicate Who You Are and What Visitors Can Do</span></h3><p>Lastly, as you work to optimize website header CTAs to boost conversion rates, <strong>don’t underestimate the role of UX copy in getting visitors to take action</strong>. </p><p>Make sure your calls to action clearly (and enticingly) communicate instructions for what happens when the button is clicked, as done on the <a href="https://presetlove.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Preset Love</a> header CTA, which invites visitors to “<em>Get the preset bundle.” </em></p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/w-k8zDu4TjIpBJ8O7YHGVsb38hAH17QOaWgHltwh02L8Zx29m9fPK6iXcSKkCSJfkcx2Q5JBarxQde2KEDeVl6UMEvRT8mQrJSiektUe3WdEsrRdLiRZVnzaU3PON461WtNlKdI618_NZ9Dw5clHu-4" alt="" /></figure><h2><span id="6_Critical_Site_Functions">6. Critical Site Functions</span></h2><p>While the goal of certain web pages is to convert web visitors into leads or customers, the objective of others is to <strong>prompt users to take a specific action</strong>. In these cases, using the website header to display critical UX elements is an excellent choice.</p><p>This allows those functionalities to stand out by establishing their importance through a visual hierarchy. The design choice also leads to higher conversions, because critical site functions aren’t hidden somewhere behind a CTA. They are displayed in the section of the website that visitors are most likely to notice first.</p><p>Brands like <a href="https://unscramblex.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UnscrambleX</a> do this particularly well by using colours, layout, and visual cues to make user input a vital part of the website header. </p><p>By using the same blue background to house both the company logo, navigation menu, and interactive element, this brand ensures that the first-time web visitors instantly see the value they stand to gain by using the tool, which maximizes their chance of converting. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/GhQyz5mauClbeKVEsZGovj04br6RT-36APt_ZIENA2rEM7UYVM9Xwzvr5BGv2MUOx0AS_yHBcIQK_83-Elzm3J5lWDAw0bek0eOYnOtbasbGo5uUZ7coKXSg7J5X3XL3CpMpe-93Ujosja3q_WB6zos" alt="" /></figure><p>There is also an alternative approach of using the website header to present key UX features, as seen on the <a href="https://moz.com/explorer" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MOZ Keyword Explorer</a> landing page.</p><p>Here, the purpose of placing the interactive element isn’t to provide instant value to web visitors. Instead, it’s to establish the brand as an authority, and to get first-time users to create a free account. From there, Moz uses a combination of retargeting and <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/how-to-use-email-marketing-business-growth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">email marketing</a> to turn these leads into paid customers.</p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/QVmH4CXXcw4B9SjyebNPN0Y4C8tDI7nin2ekwPZ7_XAVKvkQ2hXgBH5SNBD0NPfQSizXxmY4xXoMbi_xyJCZ7UN4e1gsfiilLw5UxmX_K5afREOuDeg3i7OTeljylxlXPZ8pvT9MIHVtvpQoKsezSS0" alt="" /></figure><h2><span id="7_Shopping_Cart">7. Shopping Cart</span></h2><p>As of November 2021, the <a href="https://baymard.com/lists/cart-abandonment-rate" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">average cart abandonment rate is 69.82%</a>, which means that businesses are losing approximately two-thirds of their potential buyers due to poor UX design. </p><p>In fact, according to the Baymard Institute:</p><ul><li>17% of cart abandonments happen due to complicated checkout processes.</li><li>16% because users can’t calculate total order costs up-front.</li><li>And 13% occur due to website errors and crashes.</li></ul><p>Now, you may be thinking: what does this have to do with my website header? The answer is quite simple. </p><p>Something as elementary as<strong> adding a cart navigation button</strong> to the top section of your website can help you <strong>regain some of that lost revenue</strong>, by making it easier and more convenient for web visitors to complete their purchases.</p><p>And, for an even more advanced approach to making the most of this UX element, you can do something similar to <a href="https://kopiluwakdirect.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kopi Luwak Direct</a>. </p><p>On this site, clicking on the cart icon doesn’t navigate the user away from the page. Instead, it presents them with a flyout that gives them a handy overview of their shopping cart while allowing them to continue adding items to their bag.</p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/6RJYIoGw85CMgnV9-iEPs6mRYogDqtGCtLWjNt382ygEfvZ2huKW6ovZFORFQav4Vv2BtlYdKQLYkZIIAW6VhtIu_EGQKpYc9b1d4lwd5Vc9LzASwXzwO3-bI3edQ_nhu95EwW3Ce37pRN5tgzzxX1Q" alt="" /></figure><h2><span id="8_Contact_Details">8. Contact Details</span></h2><p>Finally, as you look for ways to make the most of your website header design, don’t forget that you can use this webpage element as an <strong>instant credibility booster</strong> by doing something as simple as including your contact details.</p><p>If you know that your biggest chance of converting audiences is by having your sales team communicate with them, make sure that your website header includes information such as your phone number, social links, address, and operating hours, as done on the <a href="https://www.firepitsurplus.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fire Pit Surplus</a> homepage. </p><figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/G0xNokeWuvaYLw5t1TmTefWOOhToJgLeTsA5D2AzuCByE06G5FTr0JuU88xTwQRoQwMNX3y9RmOR5m3iD5_pRAXa8o91ikZv88j-RdVOakG-Z7Hy64EfLomewEcomRlyapHQI80rXSbosEsPFGjdEDE" alt="" /></figure><p>This won’t just show first-time web visitors that your brand is a genuine and credible business – it will also make them more likely to reach out to your sales team, giving you a valuable opportunity to turn them into loyal supporters of your brand.</p><h2><span id="The_Takeaway">The Takeaway</span></h2><p>Even though they have been proven time and again to be the prime piece of real estate on any website, headers are still commonly treated as an afterthought.</p><p>By implementing the simple tips from this article, you can ensure that every single inch of your site’s header area plays its part in driving conversions. </p><p>Don’t hesitate to make changes. Experiment with alternative design solutions, and optimize features to prioritize UX and UI. After all, if you only have 50 milliseconds to make a great first impression on your audience, making it count is not an option — it’s critical to the success of your business.</p></div> </div>

							<div id="single-post-content-wrapper" class="columns-7 "><p>Now, whether or not your business website is great isn’t up to you. You can’t force your site’s visitors to have a good time. Websites are subjective in the much same way as art. What makes a great website is going to be a little different for everyone.</p><p>The good news is that there <em>are</em> many <strong>website functionalities that are universally awesome</strong>, for any audience, branding, or design. It all comes down to the user experience.</p><p>First, you need to understand what ‘user experience’ means in relation to your business website, and why it matters this year more than ever before. Then we’ll dig into <strong>the key elements of UX design that will help you make a great website</strong>.</p><p>Feel free to use the table of contents to skip straight to the list!</p><h2><span id="UX_design_101">UX design 101</span></h2><p>You don’t have to learn to be a user experience (UX) designer to have a great website. But if you don’t understand the basics of UX, you aren’t equipped to make the best decisions about your site’s design and content.</p><p><strong>Fact</strong>: UX design moves people through the sales funnel<br /><strong>Fact</strong>: UX design directly impacts your bottom line<br /><strong>Fact</strong>: UX design affects your search ranking</p><p>This section will give you a high-level introduction to UX design, from a business perspective.</p><h3><span id="What_is_UX_Design">What is UX Design?</span></h3><p>User experience design, also known as ‘interaction design’, is about <strong>crafting a website based on usability</strong>.</p><p>UX design is like the blueprint of a house. A blueprint covers everything from the number of rooms, window placement, and which way doors open to where appliances should go. It makes sure the house is going to be livable, and has enough room for all your stuff.</p><p>UX design does the same thing, but for your website!</p><blockquote><p>For our complete homebuilding/web design analogy, check out this Forge classic: <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/build-your-contents-dream-home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Build Your Content’s Dream Home</a>!</p></blockquote><p>A UX design process typically starts with <strong>research on the intended audience</strong> for a website:</p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li>Their pain points</li><li>Their motivations</li><li>Their goals</li><li>What they need to achieve on the site</li><li>Even what they’ll probably be doing and in which emotional state when they encounter different pages</li></ul></li></ul><p>Oh yeah, UX design goes deep.</p><p>It also <strong>considers your content</strong> – what content you have, if any should be pruned, and if any major content is missing from the ideal user experience for your business.</p><p>Then it sets out to <strong>create a logical architecture</strong> for all of that content. Like a librarian, it files everything in a place where the target person would expect to find it, while creating lateral paths for alternate journeys toward the same end goal. Good UX design considers the paths of primary, secondary, and even tertiary audiences.</p><p>This is all accomplished through the <strong>decisive placement and structure</strong> of menus, callouts, call-to-action (CTA) buttons, featured or related content suggestions, and the order of content on a page. The deliverable is an interactive wireframe prototype of your website, so you can test its usability before you add colour and content.</p><p>The overarching goal of a good UX design is to <strong>deliver the right information at the right time</strong>, to keep a visitor moving through the website to reach their intended goal.</p><p>That’s a nutshell version of UX design. There’s a heck of a lot more to it than that, and you should also understand the <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/ux-vs-ui-how-they-work-together-in-web-design/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">difference between UI and UX design</a>, but as long as you focus on <em>usability</em>, you’ll make good choices and end up with a great website.</p><h3><span id="Why_UX_Design_Matters">Why UX Design Matters</span></h3><p>It’s all well and good for me to say that UX design is important – but WHY? Where’s the tangible proof that <strong>UX design needs to be a business consideration</strong>?</p><p>Let’s review the facts I presented at the top of this section.</p><h4>UX Design Moves People Through the Sales Funnel</h4><p>There are tons of ways a person could land on your website.</p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li>Through finding one of your pages in the search results</li><li>From a search ad</li><li>From social media</li><li>From an email</li><li>From a link shared in a message from a friend or family member</li><li>By typing your URL from seeing it on a print ad</li></ul></li></ul><p>How someone finds you says a lot about <strong>where they are in the buyer’s journey</strong> (and I highly recommend <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/search-intent-101-how-to-determine-and-optimize/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">learning about search intent</a>!).</p><p>UX design considers all of those options and more, and ensures that wherever a person lands, there is clear messaging, navigation, and content to help them take the next step.</p><p>This could be from top-of-funnel into the middle, like reading a blog post and being guided to view your case studies. It could also be middle to bottom, like what messaging and functionality helps a person enter and complete the checkout process. You also want to gently encourage lateral moves around the top and middle, to build up more trust among those not ready to convert.</p><h4>UX Design Directly Impacts Your Bottom Line</h4><p>Whether it’s making a sale or earning a lead, every business website has a profitable end goal. A great website has such a simple and satisfying experience that it’s natural to reach that goal.</p><p>UX considerations that <strong>directly impact leads and sales</strong> include:</p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li><strong>Menus</strong> – size, locations, options, copy</li><li><strong>CTA buttons</strong> – context, placement, copy</li><li><strong>Cart</strong> – number of steps to purchase, copy, error messaging</li><li><strong>Forms</strong> – placement, number of fields, copy in and around fields</li><li><strong>Trust and credibility content</strong> – location, prominence</li><li><strong>Gated content</strong> – location, form considerations</li><li><strong>Reliability</strong> – visible signs of data security, messaging</li><li><strong>Mobile-friendliness</strong> – easy to complete tasks on any device</li></ul></li></ul><p>Having a weakness in any one of these UX elements can cost you sales. Period.</p><h4>UX Design Affects Your Search Ranking</h4><p>Google is all about <strong>creating their own happy user experiences</strong>. That’s how they dominate the search engine market share. Google and other search engines strive to deliver effective search results ranked using machine learning, AI, and natural language processing.</p><p>What is Google looking at? Among its 200+ ranking factors you’ll find <a href="https://backlinko.com/google-ranking-factors#userinteraction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">several that come from human interaction</a> with your site. Remember that UX design is also known as interaction design, so this is literally <strong>planning for positive interactions</strong> that will be noted by search engines.</p><p>Even though a page’s title and meta description might be what earn a click from the search results, it’s the experience once the reader lands that tells Google if you’re a good site and should rank higher for that search – or lower.</p><p>Some aspects of a good user experience are controlled at the site level, while others are a part of the page design:</p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li>Fast to load (read up on <a href="https://backlinko.com/hub/seo/core-web-vitals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Core Web Vitals</a> as a new ranking factor)</li><li><a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/mobile-design-business-websites/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mobile-friendly, responsive content</a></li><li>Secure site (HTTPS)</li><li>Free from intrusions that impede user flow</li><li>Compelling presentation of content that entices longer sessions</li><li>Right messaging at the right time and clear paths to next steps, to encourage more content viewed per session (and reduce bounce rate)</li><li>Designed for accessibility</li></ul></li></ul><h2><span id="UX_in_action_how_to_make_a_great_website_design">UX in action: how to make a great website design</span></h2><p>Now you’re sold on how UX design helps business. Let’s get down to <strong>the most important UX factors your website needs</strong> to be a truly great website.</p><ol><li>Focus on one main audience</li><li>Plan for multiple paths through the site</li><li>Place menus in logical places</li><li>Be judicious with menu choices</li><li>Be judicious with all options!</li><li>Ensure clear wording on menus and CTA buttons</li><li>Harness the power of your footer menu</li><li>Know when to click and when to scroll</li><li>Allow complex details to be hidden behind clicks</li><li>Allow your website to start a conversation</li><li>Place social proof near CTAs to conversion pages</li><li>Be strategic with related content</li><li>Be extra strategic with callouts and footer CTAs</li><li>Your page flow should tell a story</li><li>Give your hidden pages some love</li></ol><h3><span id="1_Focus_on_One_Main_Audience">1. Focus on One Main Audience</span></h3><p>While most businesses have two or three website audiences, it’s just <strong>not possible to plan content that appeals to all of them</strong> equally. A strong website has a content structure, navigation, and messaging that’s mostly focused on helping a primary audience achieve their goals.</p><p>This will get stronger on-page interaction signals (the ones that talk to search engines) and result in more conversions.</p><p>That isn’t to say you should ignore everyone else. You can have navigational tools like CTAs and menu options guiding secondary and tertiary audiences to pages with their own messaging and user flows.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-14556 size-full lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 1143px) 100vw, 1143px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-300x174.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?size=360x209&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-480x279.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-768x446.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-980x569.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-1024x595.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?size=1080x627&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1143w" alt="" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-300x174.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?size=360x209&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-480x279.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-768x446.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-980x569.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 980w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete-1024x595.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1024w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?size=1080x627&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1080w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 1143w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OneCoffee-Complete.png?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 1143px) 100vw, 1143px" /></p><h3><span id="2_Plan_for_Multiple_Paths_Through_the_Site">2. With B2B audiences, we also know that they have to visit our sites several times before converting.</p><p>A great UX design will <strong>think of as many little paths as possible</strong>, and plan a logical <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/information-architecture-matters-website/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">information architecture</a> to keep those visitors flowing toward the end goals.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-15097 size-full lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2-300x220.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2.jpg?size=360x264&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2-480x352.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2-768x563.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 901w" alt="" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2-300x220.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2.jpg?size=360x264&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2-480x352.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2-768x563.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 901w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/02-Multiple-Paths-OrderMetrics-2.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px" /></p><h3><span id="3_Place_Menus_in_Logical_Places">3. Place Menus in Logical Places</span></h3><p>Whether it’s on a laptop, a tablet, a desktop, or a phone – <strong>you want your website’s content discovery to be a breeze</strong>. People expect to use menus, and they expect to find them in ‘normal’ places.</p><p>Obscured hamburger menus on a desktop site are “like putting car doors on the roof because the sides of the car look nicer without lines on it,” says our founder and lead UX designer Shawn Johnston.</p><p>Save the hamburgers for mobile, and make sure you have highly visible, easily-clicked or tapped menus. That applies to your main menu and footer menu, including search bars or filtering menus to help visitors find that content. Know When to Click and When to Scroll</span></h3><p>It’s a <strong>major UX myth that clicking is bad</strong>, and you should cut down on clicks. Ideally there is a minimal amount of clicking required to complete a task, but <a href="https://forgeandsmith.com/blog/scrolling-vs-clicking-whats-the-preferred-user-experience/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a healthy balance between clicking and scrolling</a> is still good UX.</p><p>Make sure your clicks are worthwhile. The kind of content you’d find on interior website pages is an acceptable place for clicks, because the visitor is already deeper into the website and more committed. For example: products, blog landing pages, and callouts to move between related content.</p><p>Primary pages, on the other hand, should use scrolling.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-15091 size-full lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-click-scroll-min.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-click-scroll-min.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 600w,https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-click-scroll-min.gif?size=360x264&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w" alt="" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-click-scroll-min.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 600w,https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-click-scroll-min.gif?size=360x264&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/08-click-scroll-min.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p><h3><span id="9_Do_Allow_Complex_Details_to_Hide_Behind_Clicks">9. Do Allow Complex Details to Hide Behind Clicks</span></h3><p>There’s some content that’s just too hard on the eyes. Scrolling is pleasant if there’s lots to look at along the way. But if you have complex tech specs to convey, you can benefit from <strong>placing those behind clicks</strong>.</p><p>Clicks to view more detail on a subpage are perfectly okay to use in this case. A person who wants that technical information is going to click. Another great method is to use accordion content, where the details are hidden unless clicked to expand. That way the reader controls how much they see on the page. This is especially good for FAQ pages.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-15120 size-full lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/09-Complex-Details-2.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/09-Complex-Details-2.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 600w,https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/09-Complex-Details-2.gif?size=360x300&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w" alt="" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/09-Complex-Details-2.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 600w,https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/09-Complex-Details-2.gif?size=360x300&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/09-Complex-Details-2.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p><h3><span id="10_Allow_Your_Website_to_Start_a_Conversation">10. Testimonials can actually <a href="https://optinmonster.com/social-proof-statistics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boost conversions by 34%</a>!</p><p>The best place to put this super-convincing content is right near CTA buttons that lead to conversion pages.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-15102 size-full lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1-300x127.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1.jpg?size=360x153&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1-480x204.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1-768x326.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 901w" alt="" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1-300x127.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1.jpg?size=360x153&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1-480x204.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1-768x326.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 901w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/11-social-proof-1.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px" /></p><h3><span id="12_Be_Strategic_with_Related_Content">12. Keeping a person moving around, viewing more content, is good for your sales funnel <em>and</em> good for your SEO.</p><p>We highly recommend using attractive callouts to related content, on your top- and middle-of-funnel pages. Be Extra Strategic with Callouts and Footer CTAs</span></h3><p>Another website feature that aids the user experience – when used effectively – is a callout. This block usually features copy, an image, and at least one CTA button leading to another part of your site. When placed at the end of a page, these are commonly called ‘footer CTAs’.</p><p>The thing about callouts and footer CTAs is that <strong>they have to offer a natural next step</strong>. If the callout doesn’t make sense for that stage of the buyer’s journey, it’s not going to get clicked.</p><p>It’s probably asking too much for someone reading a blog post to contact you about a custom agency-quality website. It also doesn’t make sense to call out your Careers page when the person is viewing samples of your work – that content is typically for two different audiences.</p><p>Here are examples of natural next steps:</p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li><strong>Blog Post</strong> – related posts, Newsletter signup, gated content</li><li><strong>About Page</strong> – Team page, Careers page, other content about your company story</li><li><strong>Services</strong> – related projects or case studies, Contact page</li><li><strong>Case Studies</strong> – Contact page, Book a Demo</li></ul></li></ul><p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-15104 size-full lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs-300x150.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs.jpg?size=360x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs-480x240.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs-768x384.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 901w" alt="&quot;" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs-300x150.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 300w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs.jpg?size=360x180&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs-480x240.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 480w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs-768x384.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 768w, https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 901w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/12-CTAs.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px" /></p><h3><span id="14_Your_Page_Flow_Should_Tell_a_Story">14. Your Page Flow Should Tell a Story</span></h3><p>I keep throwing out words like ‘user flow’ and ‘buyer’s journey’ – here’s how to understand that. Imagine you’re the main character in a story, the hero. Your quest is determined by what you encounter on each page of the website.</p><p>Read each page from top to bottom. <strong>A great website is going to roll out like a story</strong>. If it feels disjointed because the content doesn’t flow together in a logical order, or random topics and pages are called out, you need to revisit your story.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15105 lazyloaded" src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/14-Story.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/14-Story.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 600w,https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/14-Story.gif?size=360x264&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w" alt="&quot;" data-srcset="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/14-Story.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 600w,https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/14-Story.gif?size=360x264&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 360w" data-src="https://371814.smushcdn.com/1311180/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/14-Story.gif?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1" data-sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p><h3><span id="15_Give_Your_Hidden_Pages_Some_Love">15. Give Your Hidden Pages Some Love</span></h3><p>When a company puts thought into details you almost expect them to overlook, it creates a fantastic user experience. We expect all the main pages of a website to be usable, that’s a given. But <strong>what does a visitor experience when they find one of your website’s hidden pages</strong>?</p><ul><li class="no-before"><ul><li>Thank-you page, seen only after filling out a form</li><li>Newsletter signup confirmation</li><li>Content download confirmation</li><li>404 error page</li><li>0-result page, seen when no results match your search</li></ul></li></ul><p>These pages are too often left with short, generic text that doesn’t even feel on-brand. You have an opportunity to do something fun or rewarding, like feature a piece of content not found anywhere else on your site, display a little game or a meme, even offer a coupon code.</p></div> </div>

							<p>Your landing page needs help. A lot of it. <em>Badly.</em></p>
<p>No, stop — don’t run away. It’s not personal. Pretty much all landing pages suck, and they suck in predictable ways. (Yes, even mine.) You are far, far from alone.</p>
<p>Landing pages are typically the most neglected of all the parts in the marketing engine.</p>
<p>Despite the very clear, cold, hard facts that…</p>
<ul>
<li>Landing pages are the <em>face</em> of your product</li>
<li>Landing pages are often the <em>first</em> exposure potential buyers have to your product</li>
<li>Landing pages are the last thing buyers see before they convert (and, if they fail to convert, the last thing they see, period)</li>
</ul>
<p>It doesn’t matter what you’re selling — be it SaaS, an Ebook, a course, a webinar, or even a freebie designed to snare signups (historically called a “squeeze” page)…</p>
<p>Your landing page does <em>so much</em> heavy lifting in your business.</p>
<p>But — let’s get real — it’s weak and puny and probably a template you threw up a while ago without a lot of thought, and it is kinda lame but it’s kinda working, right, so why mess with a good thing? And the copy? Oh the copy. Urgh. Let’s not talk about the copy. Or the big picture design.</p>
<p><em>Wouldn’t it be nicer to talk about micro-optimizing a headline or a call to action button color instead?</em></p>
<p>It sure would! And it’d also be a simpler thing to write about, to be quite frank. There are lots of articles out there on <em>that</em> stuff. Because it <em>is</em> both alluring and easy.</p>
<p>Empires aren’t built out of alluring and easy, though, or everyone would do it.</p>
<p><strong>You’re here because you want to get a drastically different result. That means we need to talk about making drastic changes.</strong></p>
<p>We need to talk about the <em>BIG</em> problems with your landing page: The overall design, layout, and the copy <em>as a whole</em>.</p>
<p>And that’s gonna take a <em>big</em> article.</p>
<p>So buckle up, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Does this advice apply to <em>my</em> product?</strong></p>
<p>Absolutely!</p>
<p>It makes little difference <em>what</em> you’re selling because <em>you. are. selling.</em> The act of selling is the same because the act of buying is the same, because it’s a psychological dance that happens between two people and is governed by the laws of psychology and economics.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Does this advice apply to <em>my</em> customer? They’re cranky/naïve/hate sales-y stuff.</strong></p>
<p>Yes it does!</p>
<p>I’ve made a career out of selling to audiences who allegedly are too suspicious or tight-fisted to buy (developers). Your audience may prefer to hear things phrased in different ways and prefer different forms of persuasion and proof, but their attitudes can’t change the structure of the selling interaction itself.</p>
<p>No matter what type of buyer they are, they’re still human.</p>
<p>Humans invented commerce, <em>well</em> before we invented money. Trade is what we do.</p>
<p>Everybody buys.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>In 1905, a then-little-known copywriter named John E. Kennedy defined advertising as “salesmanship in print.” He died one of the world’s most successful, famous, and respected advertising men of all time.</p>
</blockquote>
<h3 id="your-landing-page-is-sabotaging-your-sales-process"><strong>Your landing page is sabotaging your sales process.</strong></h3>
<p>No, I don’t know you — but I can just about guarantee it.</p>
<p>Here are six <em>HUGE</em> mistakes that I see on landing pages, absolutely everywhere online, from newbies to gurus to multi-million-dollar companies who really ought to be able to know (or hire) better:</p>
<ol>
<li>Focusing on the product and not the reader</li>
<li>Leaning too heavily on features and benefits</li>
<li>The wrong kinds of vivid supporting details</li>
<li>Not enough vivid, supporting details</li>
<li>Making it physically difficult to read</li>
<li>Me-too design and copy</li>
</ol>
<p>Again, these apply to <em>every</em> type of landing page. It doesn’t matter what you’re selling, including whether that thing you’re selling is free.</p>
<p>So let’s dig into these. Starting with #6.</p>
<h2 id="me-too-design-and-copy">#6: Me-too design and copy</h2>
<p>This is the <em>largest</em> mistake I actually see in the sense that when it happens, it encompasses the <em>entire sales page</em>, and also the most common because it happens a whole heckuva lot… but in many ways, it’s also probably one of the least <em>painful</em> errors because it is the least likely to immediately destroy your sales.</p>
<p>It’s a constant, annoying hum — a background noise — not a screech of impending doom.</p>
<p>That’s why it’s at the bottom of the list.</p>
<p>But! It’s still important! Because…</p>
<p><strong>The landing page is the face of your product.</strong></p>
<p>It’s the first thing that people see when they’re <em>seriously</em> starting to think about maybe buying something, anything, not necessarily your <em>product</em>, but perhaps your ideas or your approach or even just you, as a person.</p>
<p>And when you talk to people, or hand out a business card, or send someone a link, or write a bio — it’s the place you direct people.</p>
<p>And if you pay for ads, a landing page is wherever folks land when they click.</p>
<p>When you’re doing a launch and someone reads an email that finally makes them interested enough to click a link, that’s where they end up.</p>
<p><strong>The landing page is the face of your product.</strong> I can’t repeat myself enough.</p>
<p>When your potential customer looks at your landing page then gets a phone call, or has to go to a meeting, or their dog barfs in the other room, and they get distracted and come back an hour later or the next day and they’re thinking, “What was that thing I wanted to buy? I think I’ve decided to buy it now. Where was it?” And they start looking through their tabs… Your landing page is the mental picture they’re scanning for.</p>
<p>So imagine, for a moment, the devastation if your landing page looks like every other landing page for products in your category.</p>
<p>It’s not good, folks.</p>
<p>Your landing page should <em>look different</em> from other products. It should <em>read differently</em> as well.</p>						</div>

<p>They have nearly identical layouts and design. They have a similar color palette. They use the same talking points. They list the same features, the same types of benefits. <em>Get your team all on one page! Manage files and comments!</em></p>
<p>They even have the same two buttons in the “hero” block: Take a Tour (left), Try for Free (right).</p>
<p>There’s effectively zero distinction between these products in design or copy, so how would the user know which one that they should actually invest the time to <em>try out</em> — much less pay good money for?</p>
<p><strong>Me-too landing pages happen when you:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>use templates</li>
<li>inadvertently parrot the things you’ve seen and read, and</li>
<li>implement “industry standards”</li>
</ul>
<p>Standards and commonalities are great when it comes to making people comfortable. But your product isn’t an interchangeable widget, and your job isn’t to get people to relax and nod off.</p>
<p>Your job is to <em>excite</em> people to take action.</p>
<p>When your page is too comforting and standardized, your product <em>can’t</em> stand out — not as worse, sure, but certainly also not as <strong>better</strong>, or even <strong>new</strong>. And samey-same things aren’t memorable. Or enticing.</p>
<p>If your me-too landing page is still performing okay, it only means that you’re snagging <strong>some</strong> customers before the competition does. (Or perhaps they hate their current solution so much, they’ll try anything; or perhaps they’re coming via effusive word of mouth.) That’s great! You’re semi-failing your way to success, which is a time-honored way to run a business.</p>
<p>But you can do better. Your product deserves it.</p>
<p>And it’s super, super embarrassing when someone accidentally buys the wrong product because they can’t tell them apart.</p>
<p><strong>How do you fix me-too?</strong> Well, for starters, don’t use a landing page template. Don’t simply copy what everyone else is doing. Don’t rely on your “instincts” — because your gut will serve up regurgitated garbage. Ruthlessly examine what you design and write for tropes that come automatically from exposure to other people’s work.</p>
<p>But really, the me-too problem is the culmination of <em>all</em> the other problems in this list — so if you solve the other five, you’ll solve this one automagically.</p>
<p>Bottom line though:</p>
<p><strong>You want to sell something different? Make it look and sound different.</strong></p>
<p>But don’t fall prey to mistake #5…</p>
<h2 id="making-it-physically-hard-to-read">#5: Making it physically hard to read</h2>
<p><em>Subtweet: Design trends.</em></p>
<p>Now I just got done telling you you <em>don’t</em> want your pages to look like everybody else’s pages, right? So now you’re thinking you probably want to jazz things up, maybe make things fly and animate as you scroll, or break up your content into cool multi-colored blocks, or maybe you’ll take the easier route and spice things up with some zany graphics, like people dancing with abstract colors and shapes.</p>
<p><strong>There’s just one problem: looking cool doesn’t do <em>The Job</em>.</strong></p>
<p>A man cannot serve two masters, and a piece of design and copy cannot do two jobs. Your landing page has one job: <em>Sell. your. product.</em> To persuade folks to hand over their information — maybe even their credit card — to invest time, energy, money in buying whatever you’re selling.</p>
<p>You need to persuade people that it’s worth their time, energy, money, and the <em>risk</em> they take that it will all be for naught. (Really: In the days of free trials and refunds, most buyers hate wasting time more than money.)</p>
<p>And there’s just really just one tool you can use to persuade them… and you really don’t want to know what the engagement metrics are on landing page videos.</p>
<p>Your copy. That’s the best tool you’ve got.</p>
<p>Which means… <em>you really need them to read.</em></p>						</div>

							<p><strong>Landing page design is actually a usability exercise.</strong></p>
<p>And for more than 20 years, we’ve known what makes content <em>readable</em>: One column, good spacing, strong contrast, aligned left and ragged right, and good, clear typographical hierarchy; as little to distract the eye as possible.</p>
<p>And yet, most design trends have you putting visual roadblocks in the copy:</p>
<ul>
<li>the “different sections are different colors” design</li>
<li>the “gradients… with text on them” design</li>
<li>the “multiple columns with graphics” design</li>
<li>the “content on the left, next bit of content on the right, now reverse!” design</li>
<li>the “stuff flying in and out, look at me, I’m a bird!! don’t look at that boring static text!” design</li>
</ul>
<p>If you’re breaking the copy up into seemingly discrete chunks, if you’re changing the background and text color, altering the left edge of the copy, and changing the fonts, and making stuff slide around…</p>
<p>You’re literally making it <em>physically more difficult</em> for your audience to read the copy.</p>
<p>And so… people who are lazy, or busy, or distracted, or not as invested, or not as fluent at reading as you think will <em>just give up</em>.</p> </div>

							<p>Is your “copy” actually a video or animated illustration of the product at work? Same rules apply!</p>
<p>Whatever your “copy” may be, <em>that thing</em> is <em>the most precious thing</em>, you must make it <em>so</em> easy to see and use it’s almost impossible <em>not</em> to.</p>
<p>It should be the biggest thing, the most centered thing, sharing space with nothing — and painfully obviously <strong>readable</strong> or <strong>clickable</strong>, no competing glitter, no distractions, no nothin’!</p>
<blockquote>
<p>I know this sounds silly. “Do you really think that people aren’t able to tell that the copy keeps going, even though the background color changes?” Of course they’re able to, but will they bother? Decades of usability research says no. People give a web page very, very little time to make it worth their while before they hit the back button.</p>
</blockquote>
<h2 id="not-enough-vivid-details">#4: Not enough vivid details</h2>
<p>So: The landing page is the face of your product. And the job of that face is to <em>sell your product</em>.</p>
<p>Would you buy a software from a blank-faced, eye-less, talking mannequin?? Nooooooo, <em>but you’d get nightmares for free!</em></p>
<p>Why? Because there’s something creepy as hell about a thing that appears to be human but has none of the facial features that let us “read” them. That’s the Uncanny Valley in a nutshell.</p>
<p>We can’t <strong>trust</strong> what we can’t get a grip on.</p>
<p>And, no brainer, it takes trust to open wallets (rather than run screaming for the hills).</p>
<p>But less obvious is the need to build trust at every step, not just the final payment form:</p>
<ul>
<li>I <em>trust</em> you to make this interesting enough for me to spend 5 minutes reading</li>
<li>I <em>trust</em> you to respect my inbox when I fork over my address</li>
<li>I <em>trust</em> that this free trial / free sample will be useful enough to open it and try it out and give it a chance</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Without trust, you may only <em>think</em> you converted someone.</strong> You may convince them to sign up, but that doesn’t mean you’ve convinced them to invest the time to try out the product, become a convert, and spread the word.</p>
<p>There are a lot of hacks out there for “injecting trust” into your landinag pages:</p>
<ul>
<li>badges</li>
<li>testimonials, social proof</li>
<li>logos</li>
</ul>
<p>But there’s another one that works <em>even without the other three</em>, so it works for pre-sales as well as existing products. And it’s one you rarely see talked about. Which you’ve probably guessed by now. (It’s not eyeballs, c’mon.)</p>
<p><strong>That ingredient is <em>specific, concrete, and vivid details</em>.</strong> What I call “crispy” details, á la habits researcher BJ Fogg.</p>
<p>Think of crispiness like the facial features of your landing page. And like all six problems, this one is hopelessly intertwined with the others.</p> </div>

							<p>Are you going to say to yourself, “Self: Well, I want a steak, so I’m gonna buy that steak in a box.”</p>
<p>Isn’t it just a little bit… creepy? Less creepy than talking mannequins, but… still…? Yeahhhh. No thanks.</p>
<p>In real life, grocery stores sell you steak by <em>showing</em> it to you. Steaks are in clear packaging so you can <em>see</em> the exact steak you want to buy — size, color, shape, marbling, and all. You don’t have to exert any effort to imagine it. You can spend all your energy imagining how good it’s going to be when you’re done with it.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Vegetarians: You, no doubt, enjoy touching and picking out your produce by hand, and there’s <strong>no</strong> amount of great copy or visuals that will sell you a steak, which is another persuasion principle to think about!</p>
</blockquote>
<p><strong>Your landing page must do the same job for <em>your product</em> using words, screenshots, GIFs, interactive bits, and/or video.</strong></p>
<p>The right mix of formats will depend on your audience (a great thing to split-test!), but one thing is universally true: The more specific, vivid, and concrete, the better.</p>
<p>The more details, the better the customer can imagine themselves using it, the less effort it will take for them to do so, the more energy they’ll have left over to open up their wallet and <em>try it out</em>.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Remember: My short-hand for the idea of “specific, vivid, and concrete” detail is <em>crispy</em>. Not smooth and featureless, soggy, squishy, or bland.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Banish mushy, meaningless verbs like “manage” and smooth, featureless nouns like “files” and “tasks.” Use active verbs, describe <em>what happens</em>, and use the most specific nouns you can find.</p>
<p>Don’t give your visitors a white STEAK box. Show them the steak.</p>
<p>And if you can’t show them the steak, give them the clearest word-picture of the steak possible. Tell them every damn thing about the steak, how it looks, how it’s marbled, and the farm it came from and how that cow was raised and how it will cook up, and taste, and how much their family will love it.</p>
<h2 id="the-wrong-type-of-vivid-details">#3: The wrong type of vivid details</h2>
<p>Phew. Okay: You’re sold on having <em>enough</em> details, because those concrete, very specific images build interest and produce trust. But not <em>every</em> kind of vivid, specific, and concrete detail will do. Mr Potato Head features and/or a word cloud about warm summer days on the dairy farm will not move product.</p>
<p>In my class, <a href="http://30x500.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30&#215;500</a>, I teach my students how to go from nothing to a profitable product launch. Of course, this includes several lessons on writing sales copy — and of my big rules is <em>Lead with the customer’s pain</em>.</p>
<p><strong>Nothing is more persuasive than a person’s own experience.</strong></p>
<p>My lessons say, “Describe the user’s pain experience as if you were writing a movie script.” Not unlike the little steak story I told you earlier.</p>
<p>And so, at first, everyone writes things like:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The morning light slots through your home office window! Birds are chirping, your cat is bumping your shin for her morning can o’ tuna, your radio is tuned to NPR.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Are these details vivid, specific, and concrete? Crispy, you might say? Yessireebob.</p>
<p>But…</p>
<p>They’ve got <em>zip</em> to do with whatever product is coming.</p>
<p>The copy is doing a job all right, but not the job it was hired to do.</p>
<p>It’s just so <em>tempting</em> to amp up your copy with little emotional details like that, your reader is pacing, or tearing out their hair, or stirring their coffee while they do some tedious task, etc., etc. But unless you’re literally selling some sort of anti-hair-tearing, pro-coffee-stirring product, these details can <em>only serve to turn off readers</em>. What if <em>they’re</em> not tearing out their hair or stirring their coffee? What if, in fact, they’re bald and drink only milk? You just lost them. Over nothing! You threw in some meaningless pizazz and they looked around and said, <em>“Zazz? I haven’t heard that name in years.”</em> Bam, Back button.</p> </div>

<p><strong>Vivid detail has a job, too: Connect with your reader.</strong></p>
<p>Because vivid detail exists to <em>empower</em> your landing page to do <em>its</em> job, which is — again — to <em>sell your product</em>.</p>
<p><strong>And thus, every crispy detail must earn its place on your page by relating to either:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>the reader’s problem, or</li>
<li>the product you’re selling</li>
</ol>
<p>When every detail does its duty, each one forms a link in a sturdy chain that stretches between your reader’s experience and their future with <em>your</em> product.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Don’t forget: This advice covers design details, too. Graphics need to do their job. (If you’ve been puzzled or put off by the high-profile redesigns of Dropbox or Drip lately, with their weird unrelated illustrations of people dancing with random shapes and changing colors, this is why.)</p>
</blockquote>
<h2 id="leaning-too-heavily-on-features-and-benefits">#2: Leaning too heavily on features and benefits</h2>
<p><em>Subtweet: Copywriting tropes.</em></p>
<p>Speaking of chains, let’s talk about stuff that “everybody knows” — advice that gets passed from generation to generation without question.</p>
<p>Here’s an old copywriting rule that will never die:</p>
<p><em>Don’t talk about features, talk about benefits.</em></p>
<p>What’s a feature? A thing that the product <em>has</em>, such as a number of chapters, a video on xyz topic, or a file upload function.</p>
<p>What’s a benefit? A thing that the product <em>delivers</em>. To, you know, the buyer. Such as a skill they will learn, or “manage files with ease!”</p>
<p>Here’s the thing:</p>
<p><strong>We’ve established that your visitor is one milisecond of frustration away from blowing up the Back button bomb.</strong></p>
<p>You know, now, that making your visitor do work to <em>read</em> is a losing proposition (they are gonna give up).</p>
<p>And you know that the crispier and more concrete the details you can add, the better (because you’ll grab ‘em by the frontal cortex).</p>
<p>When you combine I Hate to Work To Learn Stuff + Love Crispy Concrete Details, what you get is a loathing of abstraction. Abstraction is <em>hard</em>, y’all. Abstract <em>thinking</em> is hard. It’s not that your reader is incapable — far from it! — but that it takes effort, and you haven’t yet proven you’re <em>worth</em> the effort that abstract thinking requires.</p>
<p><strong>Yet abstract thinking is exactly what a list of features <em>or benefits</em> demand.</strong></p>
<p>Think about it:</p>
<p>You say, This app has a file feature! This book has 26 chapters!</p>
<p>The customer then has to do the mental work of figuring out,</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>Well, do I need this file feature? Is that better than using Dropbox or email? Will I get my team to use it reliably or will it just cause more backlog? Oh. There’s 26 chapters. Do I have 26 problems? It comes with three videos. Is that good? Or is six hours of recorded content too much? Am I really gonna watch that? Do I have to?</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>Again: <em>your potential buyers</em> are busy, lazy, distracted, and so on, and unwilling to spend effort without a clear reward at the end. And if they don’t expend the effort, they will never see the <em>benefit</em> of your product, and that means they won’t buy. So it’s in your interest to do the thinking for them.</p>
<p><strong>Benefits-speke is supposed to do the work for you…</strong></p>
<p>FEATURE: File management</p>
<p>BENEFIT: Manage files with ease!</p>
<p>FEATURE: 26 chapters</p>
<p>BENEFIT: Learn the complete process, beginning to end</p>
<p>But there’s a catch…</p>						</div>

							<p>Looking back at our dead-horse, me-too PM apps, they don’t say: We have a files section. We have a comments section. Those are features speak. They instead say things like, <em>Manage files and comments with ease!</em> <em>Plan, track, report! Collaborate!</em></p>
<p>Those are, in fact, benefits.</p>
<p>Gasp! The bad examples follow the rules!</p>
<p><em>(More like bane-efit, amirite?!)</em></p>
<p>Of course, you could improve this copy by getting crispy: <em>No more clicking around, manage all your project’s important design revisions from one page.</em> That’s a benefit and it’s specific and it’s concrete, but it still isn’t awesome.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>There’s still a step that the reader has to take. There’s still a gap they have to cross. They have to pause to ask themselves,</p>
<p><em>Do I click around a lot right now? Is that a problem?</em></p>
<p><strong>You’re still leaving the work to the reader — and whenever you try to make your reader work, you’re going to lose a significant number of them.</strong></p>
<p>Here’s a fact: <em>We’re not all walking around thinking about our problems 24 hours a day.</em> It may seem that way on Twitter, but we’re not, not really, and you can tell because we’re reading listicles on the internet instead of huddled in a corner screaming in a puddle of our own effluent.</p>
<p>To survive as humans, we’ve gotta tune that pain out.</p>
<p>And yet to make a sale, <em>you’ve</em> gotta bring it back up. Much like sanding wood to take paint, you’ve got to <em>prepare the reader</em> for your benefit:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>You search through email after email, hunting the little paperclip icon that hides the last <em>workable</em> design revision. It was last week, right? Oh wait, <em>was</em> it even in an email? Or was it in Slack? Or did the designer text it to you? It’s on your phone, isn’t it. Of course it is. Now you have to text it to yourself. Good grief.</p>
<p><em>Why can you never find exactly the right file when you need it?</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>That’s pain copy.</p>
<p>The right reader will be ripe &amp; ready to hear about some benefits now, please and thank you… and they won’t need to do any abstract thinking at all.</p>
<p>That’s the power of starting with pain — crispy, vivid, concrete, specific pain. Not features. Not benefits.</p>
<p>And, honestly, the magic sauce here is not <em>exclusively</em> pain. It’s something else, even more powerful than pain (while including pain!). Something that operates at a deeper level.</p>
<p>Which brings us to the #1 mistake……………</p>
<h2 id="focusing-on-the-product-not-the-reader">#1: Focusing on the product, not the reader</h2>
<p><em>Subtweet: All of us, and our obsession with our precious brain-baybeeees.</em></p>
<p>Imagine, if you will, that you’re standing in a store, looking at a rack of clothes.</p>
<p>A salesperson walks up and says with absolutely no preamble, no hello, no canihelpyous, “This shirt is made of luxuriously soft, all-natural, long-staple cotton and will wick away sweat in this crazy hot summer weather we’re having right now.” And then they hold out a hand, expectantly, for your preferred method of payment.</p>
<p>You: UM… OKAY… <em>*backs away slowly*</em></p>
<p>In real life, this would be extremely creepy. (Yes, creepiness is a recurring theme today!)</p>
<p>But online, it’s almost certainly what your sales copy is doing <em>right this very instant</em>.</p>
<p><strong>Here’s what it sounds like on <em>your</em> landing page:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Product does x</li>
<li>Product x enables you to…</li>
<li>Verb1, Verb2, Verb3: Product</li>
<li>Product: A Better XYZ</li>
<li>(and my very least favorite) “What is Product?”</li>
</ul>
<p>This mistake is <em>so subtle</em>. But once you learn to spot it, you will see it <em>everywhere</em>.</p>
<p>And it’s off-putting because there’s no room for <em>the buyer</em>. The product is taking up <em>all</em> of the conversation space. Think of it as <strong>product-spreading</strong>. Somebody sat down and wrote the copy and made the product the star of the play, and it. is. SUFFOCATING.</p>
<p><strong>That’s why a good sales person always asks questions and gets you talking first.</strong></p>
<p>Because you — YOU! the human being! — are the only necessary ingredient in any sales transaction. Yes, really: a product without a customer isn’t a product at all. Creepy McCreeperSales may be all about that one shirt, but a <em>good</em> salesperson knows there are <em>many</em> things in the store you could buy, if they can get you talking and figure out what you need and want.</p>
<p>That makes <em>you</em>, the customer, the best conversational topic.</p>
<p>Even when there’s only one product for sale.</p>
<p>Your product, after all, can’t think, speak, much less act — it can’t buy itself. It just sits there on the virtual shelf, waiting. It’s not fit to be the star of anything.</p>
<p>Your living, breathing, credit-card-toting <strong>customer</strong> is the correct focus of <em>any</em> sales transaction… and that includes the kind made of static copy.</p>
<p><strong>A good sales page makes <em>the reader</em> the star.</strong></p>
<p>Their pain, their problems, their wishes, situation, their verbiage, their success. Make every crispy, vivid, active sentence about them, not the product. Not “Product will…” but “You will…”</p>
<p>Your sales page can’t get your customer talking, but it can do the next best thing.</p> </div>

							<p>Your landing page’s face can be one that is attentive and interested.</p>
<p>And rather than focus on features (product star) or benefits (still pretty damn product-star-y), start with your reader’s experience. Then slide into how their experience could be better. Then slide into why they will have an especially excellent result… <em>with</em> your product. Build up the trust and the desire. Then ask for the sale.</p>
<p>It’s only natural when you sit down to <em>write a sales page FOR A PRODUCT</em> that you want to <em>WRITE ABOUT THE PRODUCT</em>. But it’s an instinct that kills conversions dead.</p>
<p><strong>A customer is the only ingredient you can’t build or buy.</strong></p>
<p>When you’ve got a hot one on the line, treat them right. Remember to respect their energy and time, what they do and don’t like, how they think and what they care about. Make everything you do in their service, from the product itself, to design and copy.</p>
<p>That’s the secret to salesmanship in print.</p>
